Beaver born in the wild in UK for first time in 400 years
The Guardian (U.K.) reports that, late last month, the first beaver to be born in the wild in Britain in roughly 400 years emerged from its lodge. It is one of at least two beavers that have been born after wild beavers were released in May of last year in an ancient forest on the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland.
Hilarious Photo: Another Problem Caused by Deforestation
One possible answer to the question, “How would male dogs relieve themselves if there were a shortage of trees?” that we’ve all been asking ourselves (or not). Thanks to @wakooz for brightening our day with a chuckle.
Two students see the world through the lens of wine
The Napa Valley Register tells the story of two students, Anja Cheriakova and Georges Janssens, collecting bottles of wine as they visit wineries around the world. The collected bottles will be auctioned off next spring at an event in Hong Kong to help rebuild a Laotian school. Georges’s mom is Genvieve Janssens, a winemaker for Robert Mondavi Winery for nearly two decades. So far the couple’s stops have included Russia, Mongolia (where they didn’t find wine, but fermented camel’s milk), India, Thailand, Viet Nam, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Next, they’re headed for New York’s Finger Lakes and Niagara wine regions and will proceed to South America. Brought to our attention by @VinceTracy.
Florida Marlins Delay Game Until Their Fan Shows Up
The sports pick this week goes to The Onion for their hilarious report on the tardiness of fan “Steve” for a recent game against the St. Louis Cardinals. It seems that Steve (according to the piece) is “the only person to attend a Marlins baseball game in eight years.”
Coupons Come to The Wall Street Journal
AdAge reports that The Wall Street Journal began delivering coupons inside its Weekend Edition this past Saturday, taking that business away from The New York Times. SmartSource Magazine had run in the Sunday Times for years but stopped last month after News America Marketing, publisher of the SmartSource coupon insert, decided to switch to The Journal. Perhaps not coincidentally, News America Marketing and The Journal are both owned by News Corp. Thanks to @pkitano for this one.
